The documentary Miss Representation, by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, and aired on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network.

The film explores how the media’s misrepresentations of women have led to the underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence.

  1. What a great idea to give the girls and the parents the opportunity to see this film. I can’t wait to see it and bring my 7th grader.

  2. We had a nice turnout of students, parents and teachers at last night’s screening of Miss Representation. The film shared how women are often publicly scrutinized for their appearance, rather than for their actions. It was disturbing to see how advertisers maniplate images of women and create an unattainable ideal for girls. In addition, I was struck by the statistics of the dearth of female leaders in the United States. Since seeing the film, I’m definitely viewing media through a different lens; I recommend the movie to all and encourage all Middle School and Upper School students to participate Sacred Heart’s Turn Beauty Inside Out initiatives.
